Your Closest Friends Affect Your Income And Your Happiness

Did You Know The 5 People Closest To You Affect Your Income?

Have you heard this before?  Write down the 5 people who influence you the most in your life.  The people who you go to when you have a challenge, your family or friends who you love to “hang out” with.  The people whose opinion matters to you, and the people whose approval you are looking for?

Now that you have listed your 5 people, write down their incomes.  It might look like this:

1)  Joe – $30,000
2) Sue – $40,000
3) Jim – $50,000
4) Patty – $60,000
5) Jack – $100,000

Their total incomes are $280,000, so dividing that by 5, gives us an average of $56,000.  That is probably about how much you make per year!  Cool huh? 😆 When I was first taught this by one of my mentors, he said “So Kellie, if you want to increase your income, you must start changing your 5 people”. “What?”, I thought.  “How can I change my 5 closest friends/family?” 😯  He then said “We didn’t say change them, we meant change the 5 who influence you the most and who you go to for advice when making decisions, etc.”.  Hmmm 🙄

CHANGING WHO INFLUENCED ME

This was difficult for me in the beginning of my home based business because I loved my family and friends, and I didn’t want to change that.  However, as I learned more each day about becoming an entrepreneur, I realized my values and my philosophy had caused me to end up in a situation where I had no time and never enough money!  I wanted to learn even more from successful people who had time and money.  The more I learned from them, the more I wanted to be around them!   Then in a very short period of time, my mentor was also becoming my friend.  I was surprised to find that coaches I had initially hired to coach me, wanted to “mastermind” with me after I had finished paying them, and they have become very good friends.

Before I even realized it, my “5” had totally changed and my income had changed too! 😯  Wow!  Then as time went by, I started to seek out even more successful people and once again, in a very short period of time, my “5” changed once more!  All I can say is this really works!  If you are willing to start being mentored by at least one person who is in the situation you want to be in, and you are willing to be 100% teachable, your life will change right before your eyes!   😛  Also, I can honestly say I truly love my original 5 much more than I ever have, however, I am just not influenced by them anymore.

Here’s a video describing the 5 People Who Affect Your Income:

The book “Tribes” by Seth Godin describes how one person can lead a tribe and make a huge difference in our world.  We all start off being a follower of a great leader and a student of great mentors.  When we become the best students, we are actually being groomed to become the best teachers also. The process is quite fascinating! Your philosophy, values and subsequently your influence will be directly affected by your “5”!

I would love to hear about your “5” and whether you have experienced the changes when you have changed your “5” in the comments below. May we ask you to click the “f share” button at the top of the article, to share on Facebook or “retweet” this on Twitter?

thanks for the great post about “assimilation by association”. it puts us in the driver seat to determine our own incomes, and not have them determined by others.

this is also a great exercise to revisit… you got me to do it again!

I’d heard of this precept before, but never such a comprehensive explanation of exactly HOW one can ‘upgrade’ your friends without losing the ones you love.

Since I now spend almost all of my time at home, it’s actually a lot easier to choose who my inner 5 will be ~ I get to choose YOU, ms Kellie, and other successful people that I can talk to on skype, read their blogs, and listen to them on webinars and calls.

And then, when I do spend time in person with family and friends who don’t share my viewpoints, I don’t allow their mindset to change mine.

Oh, you are so smart Goddess! You totally got it! I am so glad it was clear enough and our readers were able to “see it”. I remember initially thinking I had to “lose” the ones I loved and I found out it was totally the opposite, I got to learn to love them more than I ever have and now I get to “spoil” them too!! Heehee 🙂 So much fun!!
Thank you dear friend! You are so special! My wish for you in 2011 is for you to “look through my eyes” and see what I see in you. You are truly a diamond whose time has come to “shine”!! Much love 🙂

Well that didn’t go the way I thought Kellie. I was sure you were going to tell me that my solution to making money was to get rid of the wife and kids. That alone would save me a fortune. 😀

Seriously though, that does make a lot of sense. Now to add to my friends list.

Thanks Kellie for reminding us about this…Truly, doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting different results combined with not changing who you hang around with is the surest way to stay stuck. As much as I love my family, they can’t teach me what they don’t know. I’m so grateful that I am surrounded by successful people in our business that I can learn from to help me continue growing. It’s going to be an incredible 2011 as I add to my list of five…Didn’t Jim Rohn say the difference in five years from now will be the number of books I read and the people I will meet?

So great to see you again! Ask me to show you how to get a gravitar so we can see your pretty smile! Heehee 🙂 Yes, Jim did say that! Thanks for commenting! Aloha 🙂
