When I was a young adult, all I dreamt about was getting married, having a nice house, a child, a dog, and a great job. You know, I thought that was the “great American dream”! 🙄 When I had all of that, I found myself in Survival mode! We barely got by and each day was exactly the same!
Shifting From Surviving To Thriving
I am so grateful to have found the home based network marketing business industry, because then our life really changed! We went from Surviving to Thriving! Each day was different and an adventure, because I was learning skills which I never learned in school. It was thrilling and scary at the same time, like a roller coaster ride. As an employee, I valued “Security”, but as an entrepreneur, I valued “Freedom“. It was a whole new way of thinking. As an employee, I thought I had to do things and learn things by myself. As a home based business entrepreneur, I found teamwork made everything so much easier!
Skilled Entrepreneur
When I first started my network marketing business, I worked very hard to become a “skilled” entrepreneur. I learned to be one of the best and received many “kudos” for this. It kept me very busy because as long as I was the “skilled” one, it meant “I” had to do all the “skilled” tasks. I soon learned that just because I was now “skilled”, didn’t mean I had freedom.
It took me several years to really understand freedom and contribution. I studied personal growth for many years and as Lao Tzu said, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” This was a concept in our company that made a lot of sense to me, however, I was not very good at “teaching someone how to fish”. I had learned how to “fish” very well, however, teaching someone else to fish, was a totally different skill to develop. I realized that no matter how good of a “fisherman” I was, it was like I was an employee again because if I didn’t “fish”, we were back in the Survival mode, again! 😯
True Freedom And Legacy
I soon realized if I took the time to teach people in my team “how to fish“, I would be adding value to them, they would be “skilled”, and it would give me freedom! I realize today that I had to learn how to become a master “fisherman” first, then as I taught others to become master “fishermen” too, they went on to teach others how to become masters, and this would go on and on. It’s like the movie “Pay It Forward” and that’s how you impact the world. 😆 “You become valuable to the marketplace“, as Jim Rohn says, then you help others to become valuable too. You have now left a legacy which will go on and on and you have earned your right to Freedom.
Enjoy this video clip from the movie, “Pay It Forward”:
It’s the ultimate plan to contribution, legacy, exponential growth, and freedom!

Kellie,
Pay it Forward is one of my favorite films. To me, this idea is the best way to approach life. When you have something to share, give to others and ask them to share with others. Think of the awesome power of sharing!
Thank you for sharing this clip from the movie and this wonderful idea,
Val 🙂

Hey Kellie,
This is such powerful information. You’re exactly right, if you don’t teach duplication, you still have a “job” rather than freedom 🙂

great clip kellie, so applicable to MLM… i love how dennis dowdell says “never help your distributors! EQUIP them!” just like your fishing analogy. plus, then you have IN-dependent team members, not DE-pendent one!

Yes, you are so right Melissa! Equipping people is definitely like teaching them to fish! I learned that one the hard way as I would try to help them & help them, only to find them Dependent on me and not able to do it themselves! Thank you Melissa 🙂

Once again, a great post and inspiring on so many levels.
Becoming skilled is great, but to be able to IMPART those skills to others, That’s where the growth, money and satisfaction lie.
Thanks for the lesson, Kellie.

This was so beautiful Kellie. People don’t learn from words, rather from behavior. This illustrates it ALL! When you do one random act of kindness to another being, you will never know how far that will grow. But it does. I firmly believe in that. Thanks for illustrating it with a clip from the movie. I enjoyed it so much.

Hello Kellie,
What an extraordinary post. One of the reasons I fell in love with network marketing is because I saw it as a spiritual nervous system. Our endeavor is totally driven by assisting others to shine, to grow and to prosper.
There is no greater endeavor in life than to assist others to live their best lives.
Let’s keep playing it forward and the world will transform before our eyes.

So true, Kelly. It’s about working smart and teaching others so you can delegate. I always tell my mom to teach and delegate so she offload work from her and others can do her work if she’s not available. Business I totally agree with you. Providing value is the way to gain other people’s trust and business, eventually.

Yes, you are so correct and when we are able to “teach others” and create our own legacy, we become free as we help others to create theirs too! It’s a win-win on both sides and it feels sooo good! Aloha 🙂

Hi Kellie…The “Pay It Forward” model is great, especially when you are talking about Tribe Syndication. By helping others, you get the rewards of seeing the results.

Aloha Tim,
Yes, it’s great for syndication too! I was actually referring to everything in life, your skills in your career, family values, paying it forward to your children each and everyday. If we all took the time to teach just a few people to master the skills we have already mastered in life (like we do a baby to a toddler, then to a child), then the legacy would continue for everything we treasure in life. Life is then full of joy and we would feel fulfilled Knowing we have “payed it forward”. Much Mahalo (thank you) for your comments. 🙂

An awesome and inspiring post as always! I loved it so much I had to review it on my blog! This is the key component that so many network marketers are missing in their businesses. It’s not about us! It’s about others and teaching them how they can be successful. That is how we win. Thanks so much Kellie!

Great one from a great teacher. Appreciate the content on your blog, keep it playing. I’m working on it.
Spend a fabulous weekend with Jonathan Budd and internet leaders. Learned a few internet marketing secrets and networked with some awesome people.

Aloha Kellie!
The video, was very cute and made me smile. However I do remember watching it and although I do find it cute and funny the message in there is very real. And that is that we can change the world with one idea as big as paying it forward.
As for the rest of your post, you teach us that teaching people how to do for themselves will in turn benefit you as well. A very good point that is also pointed out by Neal Donald Walsch in his book that I am now reading “Happier Then God”. In one of the chapter he makes it clear that what you do for another you do for yourself but also what you fail to do for another you fail to do for yourself.
This brings that message of treat others how you would like to be treated to a whole other level.
Fa’afetai for the wonderful posts.
Much alofa your way,
Tinei

LOVE that movie and the philosophy of paying it forward. And, always a good remind to give with no thought of getting. When we do this, we ALWAYS do end up getting in the end!
Sometimes, in ways that surprise us!
And, love teaching the team to fish vs giving them a fish. Empowerment!

I really enjoyed this post. If we really help other to get what they want, then we will get what we want. Its so easy to go off track with this one, but I agree, this is the key to success. A good reminder. I have just started a blog of my own to share my story. I must say although I have been sharing this with friends you were my inspiration to put it out there. You are one of my mentors. Thanks for sharing
