Behind on Retirement Savings at 50? You’re Not the Only One

Aloha Ohana (family)!
Are you over 50 and behind on your retirement savings? Do you ever lie awake at night doing the math in your head, wondering if it’s too late to catch up? If that’s you, I want you to know something right away… you’re not the only one. Not even close!! I’ve talked with so many hardworking people in their 50s who carry this worry quietly, because they feel embarrassed to say it out loud. So today, let’s say it out loud together, and then let’s talk about what we can actually do about it.
How Many People Over 50 Are Behind on Retirement?
When I read this, I had to read it twice. AARP’s 2026 Financial Security Trends Survey found that among people 50 and older who aren’t retired yet, 42% have less than $50,000 in retirement savings (AARP, May 28, 2026). That’s almost half of us, right? The same report found that 60% are worried about having enough money to last through retirement, and 69% say prices are rising faster than their income. Wow! So if you’ve been feeling that “knot in your stomach” every time someone mentions retirement, please know you’re in very good company.
Why Am I Telling You All Of This?
Because I don’t want you to sit in shame. Most of the people I talk to didn’t do anything “wrong.” They raised their kids. They helped their parents. Their job changed on them, or the bills just kept going up. Life happened! And I can tell you, beating yourself up about the past won’t add one dollar to your future. What it does do is keep you frozen, and frozen is the one place we can’t afford to stay.
Is It Too Late to Save for Retirement at 50?
My honest answer is no. At 50, you still have time. You most likely still have your paycheck, and you have something money can’t buy… your experience. All those years of working hard, solving problems, and taking care of people are worth so much more than you think. (Disclaimer: I’m not a financial advisor, so please talk with a licensed professional about your savings and investment choices. What I’m sharing here is my own experience and my opinion only.)
What Can I Do If I’m Behind on Retirement at 50?
So instead of lying awake worrying, try asking yourself one simple question, or ask your AI out loud (no typing needed, just press the little microphone and talk): “What’s one small step I can take this month?” Maybe it’s learning something new. Maybe it’s starting something part-time while you still have your job. That’s exactly what I did back in 1995. I didn’t quit the corporate world first and hope for the best. I built something on the side, one step at a time, while I was still working. And the most important lesson I learned is that you don’t have to figure it out alone. Find someone who’s already walked the road you want to walk, and let them help you see the next step.
