Social Media – A Fundamental Shift In Communication
Social Media is a fundamental shift in the way we communicate today. Why? What’s your favorite restaurant? What made you decide to try it the first time you ate there?
Loyalty & Trust
About 20 years ago, we were looking for a good Japanese restaurant in our area. We wanted good Japanese food at a reasonable price, and we expected good service. We asked people to recommend a good Japanese restaurant. There was one restaurant which my parents really liked, and we started to go there weekly. We enjoyed the food, it was reasonably priced, the service was good, and soon enough, the owner noticed that my mother was a frequent customer, so they became friends.
Today, my mother gets special treatment and reservations whenever she wants to. And guess what? It’s the only Japanese restaurant we ever go to. They developed a “loyal” customer for the last 20 years and we recommend the restaurant to everyone.
So, I was looking at this and how this relationship was developed:
1) What is their target or niche market? (people who want reasonably priced, good Japanese food)
2) How do they get loyal customers? (they provide good products and services and they build a relationship with their customers)
3) How do they keep their loyal customers happy? (they enhance their relationship and truly make the loyal customer feel special)
4) How do they get more loyal customers? (their current loyal customers/friends are so happy that they refer their friends to them)
Develop A Relationship With Your Customers
Isn’t this the best way to do business and keep business? You know all of your customers well, and you develop a relationship with them. 😀 So if that is true for you, then how do we accomplish this all around the world using advertising? 🙄 We Don’t. 😉 We may make a sale, however, if we don’t develop a relationship with the customer, we will never establish long term loyalty because people want to know that we care about how they feel. My mother feels like the owner of the Japanese restaurant is her friend, who will always take very good care of her when she dines at her restaurant. And they have…for over 20 years!!
Social Media Is The Biggest Shift In Communication
So what does this have to do with Social Networking? Well, Social Media is not just a fad, it’s the Biggest Shift since the Industrial Revolution! Why? Because it enables us to do all of the 4 points above with the entire world, as long as they are connected to the Internet. Social Networking platforms are allowing people from all over the world to connect and build very special relationships with people all over the world. In fact, because it is very easy to find “like-minded” people, we are building very close relationships with people whom we never met in person. 😀
Here are a few current facts about Social Media today:
1) Over 50% of the world’s population is <30 yrs old, & 96% of Millennials have joined a social network.
2) Social Media is the #1 activity on the Web.
3) Years to reach 50 Million users:
Radio = 38 years
TV = 13 years
Internet = 4 years
Ipod = 3 years
Facebook added >200 million users < 1 year
4) If Facebook were a country, it would be the 3rd largest – 540,000,000
5) Youtube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world; every 4 mins, 100+ hrs of video will be uploaded.
6) There are over 200,000,000 Blogs.
7) 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations, only 14% trust ads.
8) 60 Million Status updates on FB daily; 50% of active users log onto the site daily; average user on more than 55 mins/day on FB, 70 languages.
9) Monthly users spend 8.3 billion hours on FB.
10) Twitter averages 50 million tweets per day.
Here’s the latest video on the Social Media Revolution:
Word of Mouth is now World of Mouth and it’s growing exponentially everyday! The good news is that the old media paradigm was PAY to PLAY. Now you get back what you authentically put in, and you’ve got to be willing to PLAY to PLAY. Now business will be about authenticity, integrity, and truly caring. Those who build relationships will build loyalty and their customers will be very satisfied. It is truly becoming a Win-Win business model! 😆 The social media tidal wave is here. Are you ready to swim with the current?

Kellie, this is so incredible! The one statement that has captured my attention here and truly has been an instrumental part in my success on social media is this: “You get back what you authentically put in.” That to me is true sense of adding value to the marketplace of who you are and what you’re about. I believe not only has my facebook profile been a place for business but also that of personal development. I respect that others may be doing and involved in other businesses but, this is also a place where one can come to get daily reminders of the principles of success.
I appreciate what you’ve done here to educate.
One funny thing I’d like to add is, I thought I was flying? Now I’ve got to learn how to swim with the current? lol! Since when does an eagle turn into a fish? 😀 Just kidding..I totally get the picture!
Love you much,
Shannon

It has been a fascinating journey as social networking and social media keeps on growing exponentially. I am so happy you found your “voice” to be authentic and to grow. I feel the same way as you do in that as I have opened myself up to being more authentic, the personal growth and the great rewards which are inevitable as you expand are “mind boggling”!
Thank you for allowing yourself to grow and expand and please know as you expand, I do too, cause as you know…”When you help enough people get what they want, you get everything that you want.” So thank you for assisting me to grow too! 🙂
BTW, yes, didn’t we tell you, after you learn to soar, you also must become a master swimmer because you live in Hawaii…LOL…:)

Kellie,
The internet has definitely changed up the game plan. In many ways, I think it’s so much better that people are connecting and building relationships instead of just selling their wares.
Smaller, hometown businesses have always operated in this fashion, now the big guys will have to make some adjustments. This is absolutely a win-win situation!

Aloha Val,
It is so true isn’t it. The big guys will have to make huge adjustments and it feels so good to have win-win situations. Now, the small guy with an internet connection can have a huge world-wide impact.
Thank you for your comments. Aloha 🙂

Kellie,
Great article! Strong statistics – were did you pull them from?
With social media advertising being more about relationships and friendships, I think it gives the solo-entrepreneur a better chance to reach and keep customers.
Good job, thanks!
Blessings,
John

Hi, Kellie! I loved how you tied your favorite restaurant into your post. Your stats about social media are compelling. Your blog reminded me of what someone told me when I sponsored her in my business – she said in her previous network marketing businesses, as soon as she was brought aboard, her sponsors disappeared. My team & I develop & continue the relationships and that’s so important for both success and to continue building your business. Social media is certainly a great way to do that. Thanks for the post!

Kellie
Yes, building relationships in business goes a long way towards winning the loyalty of one’s customers. I agree that “people want to know that we care about how they feel”. Unfortunately, many businesses where I live don’t seem to get this.
I like that today we can make new connections without leaving home. I’d like to connect with you on Twitter.

Social media is my Absolute Best thing.
It’s like a Virtual Cocktail party and I can flit from group to group, making friends and connecting with ‘like-minders’.
Provided, of course, I don’t come across those party-poopers who start spouting their biz opp before you’ve even said ‘how do you do’!
But then again, this IS virtual, and I can just Click and disappear.
And the nice thing about being thoroughly authentic and chatty online (ie following your advice here) is that I never run out of people to talk to!

I love the way you verbalize your ideas! So creative and goddess-like! I’ll have to observe and learn. 🙂
Yes, social media is like a virtual cocktail party isn’t it? I love when you say I can click & disappear! And yes, it’s so wonderful to connect with people who already have the same interests as you!
Thank you Jacqui! I love your essence! Aloha 🙂
